City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Beauty & Spa
Who is this qualification for?
This level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Beauty & Spa Therapy aims to provide you with a range of specialist practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to employment or further training within the Beauty & Spa Therapy industry.
A Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or equivalent industry experience is a recommended entry requirement.
This qualification is suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years and must complete a minimum of 540 guided learning hours.
What does the qualification cover?
This qualification covers a very wide range of practical skills and knowledge required for working in the beauty and spa therapy industry.
These are compulsory areas:
- Promote and sell products and services to clients
- Provide body massage
- Provide facial electrotherapy treatments
- Provide body electrotherapy treatments
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Provide dry spa treatments
The optional areas studied include:
- Tanning treatments
- Monitor and maintain the clients spa journal
The subject specialists work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and deliver of training. Demonstrations and talks on the industry will be provided throughout and students will undertake structured work-experience or work placement that develop skills and knowledge relevant to the qualification. This practically based training is ideal preparation for gaining employment in the beauty or spa therapy industry or specialist further study.
Summary of assessment methods and conditions
There will be an externally marked test set and externally marked, and will be sat online through City &Guilds’ computer-based testing platform.
The test is designed to assess candidate’s depth and breadth of understanding across the mandatory content in the qualification at the end of the period of learning, and will be sat under invigilated examination conditions.
Candidates who fail this test at the first sitting will have one opportunity to re-sit the test. If the re-sit is failed the candidate will fail the qualification as a whole, and cannot achieve the qualification within that year.
Externally moderated synoptic assessment is an assignment which will be externally set, internally marked and externally moderated, and designed to require the candidate to identify and use effectively in an integrated way an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories and knowledge from across the whole content area

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the skills and knowledge health & safety, customer service and also have the necessary advanced technical skills to be employed as a Senior Beauty/Spa Therapist.
This qualification could lead to a job as a Senior Beauty/Spa therapist working in one of the following establishments:
- Beauty Salon
- Cruise Ship
- Hotel salon
